Category: Festivals in Nepal

Nepal is a diverse country with a varying landscape, rich bio-diversity and diverse culture of the people residing in it. Each community has their own unique cultures and traditions which they have been following for centuries. Each of them has their own set of rituals and festivals to celebrate.  No wonder Nepal is called the land of festivals as Everyday is another day of celebration for one or other community. The best part of all is one’s pride in one’s own culture and respect for the others’. This is why these bundles of so many cultures and festivals are harmoniously coexisting in Nepal.

Being a multi-religious, multiethnic and multicultural country, Nepal observes and celebrates a myriad number of festivals. Most of the Nepali festivals have religious prospects, some are historical, some are based on ancient myths, and some are seasonal celebrations. Each Nepali festival has its own significance. Most of the festivals are related to gods and goddesses of Hindu and Buddhist. Some are observed to pay respect and honor of the relatives such as mother, father, ancestors, and people who are already dead, some are observed to worship nature, plants and animals. Some of the festivals like Dashain and Tihar are of national significance whereas certain caste and community particularly observe some festivals. Some festivals are celebrated only in a definite region of the country.

Nepal is, now, a secular country. However, the most of the population are Hindu; hence most of the festivals are observed and celebrated by Hindu people. There are some festivals observed only by Buddhists and Muslims. Even though there are very few Christians, Christmas is commonly celebrated in major cities.

Most of the Nepali festivals descend on different dates every year as the dates for all the festivals are fixed by main astrologers by going through the lunar calendar. Hence, some of the festival day does not match the solar calendar. With all these diverse festivals that are celebrated in the relation of socio-cultural heritages, people of Nepal have religious tolerance and are living in harmony. Each festival is equally respected as the other, whether or not one is celebrating.
