Makalu Barun national park was established in 1992 .It is a extension of Sagarmatha national park. The protected area by this park is Sacred Himalayan Landscape. Makalu Barun National Park is the eight national park among the Himalayan regions. This national park is only the one national park in our country with strict preserve nature. It has a richest, unique species , pockets of plants and animals. This park have a Fifth highest mountain of World “Makalu”. The height of Mt. Makalu is 8463m. Makalu Barun National Park consists of mountain peaks, glacial lakes, glaciers, cliffs. rivers, hot water springs, forests, etc. While the major highlight of the park is Mt. Makalu .
Location of Makalu Barun National Park
It covers area of 1500 square km. It lies in the Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha district of Nepal along the Himalaya of Nepal. Makalu Barun National Park is bordered by the Arun river in the east and Sagarmatha national park in the west. This Park is located in a Himalayas of Nepal.
Flora and Fauna
It is the richest conversational area. It contains 78 species of fishes,43 species of reptiles016 species of amphibians, 315 species of butterflies ,many others. There are barking deer, red fox, snow leopard,Indian leopard, mountain tahr,black beer, red panda, jungle cat, etc. The Makalu Barun national park has got high diversity of fauna. tree species containing Sal, Oak, Maple. Chir pine, Sorbus, Rhododendron, etc. There are 284 species of vascular plants among which 8 endemics are recorded.
The park has 88 mammal species including snow leopard, musk deer, the red panda. wild boar and Himalayan black bear.
Climate
Monsoon starts in June in this region. The tropicals and subtropical regions are frost free. Monsson starts early in this region. Pre monsoon rain come in April and May. Makalu-Barun area falls in the eastern Himalayan climatic regime where monsoon starts early (June) and stays longer than in west Nepal (until late September). More than 70% of the precipitation occurs between June and September.
Best Time to Visit
Best time to visit Makalu Barun national park is Spring and Autumn. Camping is impossible in harsh winters. Monsoon rains in June and September. It occurs landslides. It obscure Mountain view.
How to Reach Makalu Barun National Park ?
we can reach the national park by air, bus transportation. Jeep are used for transportation as choice. The distance between Kathmandu and Makalu Barun National park is 175 km. There are daily flights to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu and Biratnagar to Tumlingtar could also be reached from Biratnagar/Dharan. It is a 6/7hrs drive to Hile and 3 day trek to Tumlingtar from there.You can also reach Inkhu valley of Makalu Barun from Lukla and Phaplu. There is regular flight from Kathmandu to lukla/phaplu.
